◆Before World War I, there was no nation of Syria. The whole region was part of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire. The Turks came in on the side of the Germans, and lost when the Germans lost. The British and French took over control of the area from the Turks and divided it up between them. They created Syria (and Lebanon, and Iraq, and Palestine) more-or-less arbitrarily. Syria became a French colony.
Fast forward to end of World War II. All the old empires were breaking up. France was in ruins. Syria got its independence. The new government turned its back on the Western powers (seeing them as oppressors), and allied itself with the USSR. And this is a key point: even though the USSR is gone, Syria is still an ally of Russia. So Russia is trying to protect the government in the civil war. It is attacking the rebel groups.

Background:
Almost 3/4th of Syrians are Sunni Muslims. 13% are Alawi or other Shia groups. 13% are other minorities.
Alawis are in majority in only a few provinces as shown.
Other than religious groups, there are two major ethnic groups. Kurds (10-15%) and Arabs (85-90%).

Syria is ruled by Alawi Hafeez Ul Assad and now his son Bashar Ul Assad.

The civil war arose in part because of a massive drought (global warming is not a hoax). The impoverished farmers all moved into the cities looking for work. They protested that the government hadn't done enough to help them. The Assad régime brutally crushed the protests. A revolt began, with many different factions fighting both each other and the government.

Arab Spring:
With the rise of Arab Spring in Syria, Syrian Sunni Arabs (65 to 70%) started protests against Assad in 2011. Assad government tried to suppress the protest using power and stormed the peaceful protesters. Several unarmed civilians got killed during mid 2011.

Becauseof Assad's brutal response to the protests, a violent revolt started. Many army units (Sunni Arabs) refused to attack civilians on Assad order and rebelled to form Free Syrian Army.

Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) take it as a chance to increase its influence and send Abu Mohammad Al Jolani with many Syrian fighter to fight in Syria against Assad. He founded “Al Nusra Front” with support of local fighters. Many other Jihadist groups have formed by then.

◆THE ERA OF ANOTHER HOT TOPIC *ISIS* BEGINS HERE😶😶:
Islamic State (ISIS):
In early 2014, ISI leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi announced the merger of Al Nusra Front and ISI as ISIS. Al Nusra Front rejected the merger and announced its alliance with Al Qaeda.

◆THE CURRENT SCENARIO GOING ON UP THERE:👇👇
- ISIS control roughly 1/3rd of the country.
- Government have another 1/3rd.
- The rest is splitted between various groups of Opposition and Kurds.
Now to spilit the groups
- Rebels are supported by US-Arab-NATO alliance.
- Asaad is supported by Russia-Iran alliance. Russia is bombing rebels and ISIS.
- Kurds are supported by US
- Kurds and Turkey are at war with each other.
- Al Nusra Front is supported by Al Qaeda. However it coordinates with US supported rebels
- ISIS is at war with all of the above.
